According to the most recent United Nations population data, the average age of Nigerians has decreased steadily over the last half century from a high of 19.1 in 1960 (year of Independence) to about 17.7 in 2015 – a drop of 1.4 years. A Nigerian national is likely to be a young urbanite, rather than an older rural dweller of 55 years ago.

What does it all mean? Well, demographics, as they say, is destiny – an especially useful indicator for politicians, policy-planners and business interests. So, if you ever find yourself wandering the streets of a Nigerian city, don’t be alarmed when you run into more than your fair share of 17 year olds, probably chatting on WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram all at the same time.
