Residents of Warri and its environs were yesterday gripped with fear following a joint military patrol on major streets, just as politicians intensified their campaign towards presidential and governorship elections.
Commanding officer, NNS Delta, Warri Naval Base, Navy Commodore Musa Gemu who spoke with Sunday Sun about the action explained that the exercise was designed to allay the fear of members of the public about the rumour of bloody situation during the general elections.
“We regard it as a show of force to further assure the public not to panic during and after the elections. We want to give confidence to the people that they have nothing to fear in case of eventuality,” the Navy boss stressed.
Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of Labour Party, Chief Great Ogboru, has assured of transparent governance if voted in as governor of the state.
Ogboru in a town hall meeting with professionals and political leaders at the weekend in Warri, also promised to be prudent with security vote allotted to him, explaining that he will rather use it to enhance security, health services and improved educational standard. He, however enjoined the electorate to arm themselves with their permanent voter’s cards, explaining that with the cards they can vote in the candidate of their choice.
“Don’t sell your conscience with money and put your children’s future in jeopardy. It is better for you to vote for someone that will transform the future of the people of the state,” counseled Ogboru. He insisted that justice and fair play must prevail in the elections.
