No fewer than two persons sustained injuries when armed men suspected to be political thugs working for a senatorial candidate attacked the campaign train of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife.

The armed men, it was learnt ambushed her convoy and in the process, attacked a branded bus belonging to the campaign train. Two persons were seriously wounded in the attack, a source said.
The attackers were suspected to be members of the defunct Ndi Mpiawazu, a deadly gang that held Onitsha and other parts of Anambra hostage for years.
One of the victims of the attack, Chikwado Igwe, said they were returning from Onitsha, where they had accompanied Ekwunife on her campaign tour, but could not catch up with the police back-up vehicle when boys numbering over 30 in unbranded buses double-crossed and attacked them.
“We could not meet up with the police back-up vehicle, so they double-crossed us, and one of them opened our bus and they started beating everybody in the bus and they used the cutlass they were wielding to attack us and in the process, two of us were seriously injured. ”
The victims, recuperating in an undisclosed private hospital in Awka, said it took the intervention of a team of policemen attached to Uche Ekwunife Campaign Organization to rescue them after one of the campaigners escaped into the bush to make a distress call.
When policemen arrived the scene, it was gathered the attackers were still on rampage and three of them were arrested and taken to the Central Police Station, Awka for interrogation.
Reacting to the development, Director, Media and Publicity, Uche Ekwunife Campaign Organization, Dr. Edozie Aroh, expressed concern over what he described as dirty politics being played by one of the senatorial candidates in the zone.
