Former Green Eagles’ captain, Henry Nwosu, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Coach Willy Bazuaye who passed on Tuesday after a protracted illness.
Nwosu who played under Bazuaye at the defunct New Nigeria Bank Football Club of Benin described the late coach as a great motivator, who cared so much about the welfare of his players.
“Coach Bazuaye was a great motivator. He was always interested in the welfare of his players. In those days at New Nigeria Bank Football Club, he would spend his money to motivate the players to win matches. He related to the players like a father,” Nwosu recalled.
“Everyone can attest to the fact that he was a successful coach, both at club level and as a national team coach. He would be remembered as the first indigenous coach to win an Olympic gold medal in football event at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics,” the former Green Eagles’ midfielder said.
“I’ve called his son, Baldwin, to express my condolences to him and the rest of the family. I was looking for a way to send some money to assist him when I learnt about his ill-health, unfortunately, I couldn’t do that before his death. I pray that God grants his soul eternal rest, and the family, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” the former New Nigeria Bank Football Club captain prayed.
