INEC Sporadic shootings in Osun
The Osun East senatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Francis Fadahunshi, on Monday alleged that he was attacked by some suspected gunmen in front of the state party secretariat late Sunday night.
Sola Olowoye, the spokesperson of Fadahunshi Campaign Organisation, who disclosed this to newsmen in Osogbo on Monday, explained that Fadahunsi’s convoy was returning from Independent Natioanl Electoral Commission’s (INEC) head office in Osogbo when some unidentified men shot at him.
Olowoye also disclosed that a vehicle had been noticed trailing the convoy, adding that the development forced the security aides attached to him to divert into the premises of the PDP secretariat.
“But as he was being rushed into the premises of PDP secretariat, some armed men alighted from the vehicle that had trailed us from INEC office and fired several shots at the Toyota Solara car conveying Fadahunshi,” Olowoye said.
He added: “He barely escaped being hit by the bullets. Fadahunshi was in company of the state chairman of PDP, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa, and other party leaders when the attack took place. They had visited the INEC office because of the delay in announcing the winner of the senatorial contest.”
There were also sporadic gunshots along the Abere Road leading to the town as soon as Fadahunsi and his APC contender, Babajide Omoworare, left INEC premises, causing panic among the residents and apprehension in the state capital.
Daily Sun gathered that the gunshots were a part of protest that had trailed the reportedly controversial result of the Osun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly election, with both Fadahunsi and Omoworare claiming victory.
Meanwhile, INEC yesterday afternoon returned the incumbent senator representing Osun East, Babajide Omoworare, as the winner of the last Saturday’s poll.
Omoworare polled 101, 352 to defeat the PDP candidate, Prince Francis Fadahunshi, who polled 99,166 votes.
The result of election the in Ife Central Local Government Area had been subject of controversy, following allegations of abduction of the returning officer, which delayed the release of the result till about noon yesterday.
