Efforts to deepen the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) popularly called cooking gas may have received the needed boost as the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers (LPGARAN) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have concluded plans to develop a blueprint for the sector.
National Chairman of LPGARAN branch of NUPENG, Mr. Michael Umudu, who disclosed this shortly after the inauguration of the national executives at NUPENG headquarters in Lagos Monday, said it remained regrettable that Nigeria was still battling with the challenge of low LPG usage at a time countries like Indonesia had increased on the level of LPG consumption in their country.
He said one of the cardinal objectives of the new executives would be to increase the level of awareness among Nigerians on the benefits inherent in LPG usage, adding that the sector was capable of creating jobs in thousands if well maximised.
And to realise the objective, he said the retailers body would develop a blueprint on how to move the sector to the next level by advising government and its agencies in the gas sector on how best to develop the sector.
He said the priority of the new executives would be proper organisation of LPG retailers in all units, state chapters and zones, adding that the body would make sure that all LPG retailers are registered with the union within the shortest possible time.
On safety handling of gas and other associated accessories, Umudu said LPGARAN, in conjunction with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), will ensure that quacks don’t have a room under the new LPGARAN-led executives.
‘‘We shall ensure safety of our members, customers, neighbours and general public. We will equally ensure that our members do the business in the manner that will make gas usage safer and therefore encourage more people to embrace gas for their commercial, industrial and domestic needs,’’ he said.
