Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has distanced himself from the Saturday Sun publication of March 14, 2015, with the headline:” “I will be president after Jonathan.” He said the report did not only misrepresent him, but also has pitted him against many politicians in the country.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Israel A. Ebije, said Governor Aliyu never said he was going to be the next president after Jonathan, adding also that there was no place in the interview he claimed he was going to the Senate to ‘mark time.’
Ebije said the governor noted that the Senate is a place for more research, insisting that it was wrong for anybody to think it is a retirement place for governors.
He said Aliyu is more concerned over the need to tackle the myriads of challenges in the country if elected into the Senate.
“Let me state in categorical terms that The Sun is one of the staple publications in Niger State, especially within government circles. This is, however, a case we cannot sweep under the carpet, especially as politics of calumny, sentiment and blackmail is now the trend among politicians,” the statement said.
While commending The Sun management and staff for robust media content, balanced news coverage, he said this was the first time the governor would have reason to ask the newspaper to address misrepresentation.
According to him, the need to urgently correct the error cannot be overemphasised, adding that “already, the misrepresentation is trending on the internet, with unprintable analysis against the person of Dr. Aliyu.
