Elder statesman, Alhaji Maitalma Sule, yesterday admonished politicians to eschew violence, coercion and intimidation of opponents which he said doing so, would promote peaceful general elections.
Speaking at the “Kano elder statesmen and stakeholders’ meeting on the peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections”, the former Nigeria’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations (UN), said: “Power belongs to God and God gives power to whoever he is pleased with”.
The occasion attracted top politicians. Alhaji Sule, who is the Danmasanin Kano, told politicians that,” no matter how much you foment trouble or create violence to take power, if it is not the wish of God that you take power, you will not get it. You will be wasting your time and you will be incurring the wrath and anger of Almighty God”
“Violence is not the answer. All religions teach us to live in peace with one another. If we are to contest the poll, we should contest it in peace. That is why we are appealing to you, particularly in Kano- which is the centre of commerce and centre of religion- to conduct yourself in peace and conduct the next election in peace,” he stated.
